This brings us back  to the idea of ruination, the land reclaiming what was once was. As the conflict ensues at the end of the novel and Clare is supposedly shot, as her life is fading she starts to remember things and languages, and the novel ends with an array of sounds. They’re the sounds of birds calling to one another in the forest, drowning out all that was there before and reclaiming their space. This could also be the calling of Clare’s Death, just as her mother heard the cries of dogs at the passing of her grandmother, these birds could be wailing for the death of her.
