Ruination is the process of the land reclaiming itself, after it’s original has been altered or changed by the hands of man it returns back to nature. It has 3 stages essentially; the initial cultivation of land, the halting of that cultivation, then the regrowth. This is also indicative of Clare’s experiences through her own life as she moved through places in her life. As a child her father had a hand on her upbringing, attempting to “Americanize” her, once she moves to Europe for a time to further her studies she avoids any situations that may expose her identity, and once she goes back to Jamaica she is reaffirmed in the history and teachings of her people and their struggles.
